Foxygen, the East-coast-West-coast tag-team earning themselves serious buzz lately, is worthy of the attention. Few can sound so overwhelmingly retro, while at the same time so wildly original. Their throwbacks are both sincere—they describe themselves as de-Wes-Andersonized, which I assume means un-ironic—and schizophrenic. The Stones, Velvet Underground, The Monkees and The Kinks are all thrown into the cauldron and swirled about, each one sampled with both love and detachment. Their aloof rendering of the 1960s and 70s is quite fantastical; the meandering, sporadic energy a nice alternative to the three-minute pop songs the indie-blogosphere has become so used to. Foxygen’s debut record, Take The Kids Off Broadway, is due out July 24 via the always-rad Jagjaguwar.
