Week ending August 5th 2012 | Bored of reading already?

One Direction, Pink Floyd, Ed Sheeran, Tony Sly & Killing Joke

On a daily basis, we're constantly inundated with news. News about political affairs, news about what's happening in the sporting world, entertainment news that's now more like gossip as opposed to actual news, and news about family, friends, and the cat down the road. Basically, information has never been easily attainable than it is today. In some way, this is fantastic, enabling us to constantly develop our brains, and in another way, we're bombarded with so much crap we have to wade through it to get to the good bits...

Orange Floyd

Poster boy for gingers across the world, Ed Sheeran is said to be teaming up with prog rock heroes Pink Floyd (sort of) to close out the greatest show on earth. The Olympic gig has splurged a number of rumours about who is and is not performing, although this rumour has continued to pick up speed after being reported in the Guardian and NME. Sheeran has confirmed what many fans would struggle to believe by saying not all three band members of Pink Floyd will be there.

Judo pussy

As Russian president Vladmir Putin enjoys watching one of his comrades win Gold in Judo this past week at the Olympics, while being generously hosted by British Prime Minister David Cameron, protesters outside the Olympic park have been announcing their displeasure of the treatment Pussy Riot have been facing in prison. The band’s trial began this week and Putin reportedly told Interfax news agency, “I don’t think that they should be judged so harshly for this”. Maybe Cameron held some influence over him during their chat at Number 10 Downing Street but it seems more likely the leaders caved to public pressure from music legends Pete Townshend, Jarvis Cocker and Red Hot Chili Peppers. Other reports have said the female prisoners have not been fed or slept well while awaiting trial.

Some sort of Killing Joke...

Legendary post-punk band Killing Joke have had some unusual activity recently with reports surfacing that frontman Jaz Coleman seemingly disappearing. There was evidence of upset after Coleman posted on the band’s Facebook page about his upcoming tour with the Cult and the Mission, “"It gives me great pleasure to announce the cancellation of the upcoming gigs with the Cult and the Mission… Frankly, playing at a gig with the Cult never appealed to me in the first place. The only reason we allowed ourselves to be talked into it was to blow both bands off the stage”. His bandmates removed that post and said they are trying to find their lead singer so they can go ahead with the tour. Here’s hoping Coleman is safe wherever he is.

Tony Sly was his name

Heartbreaking news rocked the punk community this past week with frontman of No Use for a Name, Tony Sly passing away. The singer played a show in Gainesville on July 29th and was confirmed dead on August 1st. Tributes have poured in from Fat Mike, The Offspring and Rise Against and many others in memory of the skate-punk hero. The cause of death has not yet been confirmed. RIP Tony Sly.

The kids in America

Joy of joys, Britain’s greatest musical exports have been rewarded for their musical talent by being recognized in what may be the world’s most prestigious music event of the… wait… sorry. Scratch that. We are receiving fresh reports that One Direction and The Wanted have been nominated as Best New Artist at the MTV Video Music Awards. Oh well, I guess its that time of year again.

Below we have the latest music news headlines and some of our favourite reviews, competitions and features from the past 7 days that have been featured on the AltSounds pages.

With so much music around, how do you know which albums, EPs and singles are actually worth checking out? Check out the AltSounds view on the following releases...

"Underneath the barrage of ferocious and unrelenting metalcore are a few new sounds which act like a cushion for the hefty blows felt at this point. Subtle synth notes and manipulated vocals are a cool contrast and are perfectly paired with big melodies..."

"This a moody atmospheric record which is most evident on songs like I can feel you. It has a dark thumping base line that marries her sleek voice perfectly drawing the listener in, making it one of the albums many standout tracks..."

"MAKE play dark, thudding Post Metal of the first order. We’re talking guitar riffs drenched in reverb and bombastic drums to create a bleak, immersive atmosphere. There’s so much more, however, to their new album Trephine and a great balance between warm guitar riffs and the cold, distant howl of singer and guitarist Scott Endres creates some fantastic moments..."

"Still showing a hint of the more traditional rock sound that has steadily developed across the band's twenty year career, Candy Coated Fury is a still a confident return to the ska roots that made Everything Sucks such an enjoyable and popular effort..."

Next week we have the top albums of the year so far voted by our staff, Festival competitions and much more...
