In retrospect, Tame Impala playing in front of an oscilloscope projection is totally logical. Felt like a million dollar idea last night though. This was the first time I’d seen the band since their introduction to NYC at Glasslands and then Greenpoint’s Coco66 with MGMT a few summers ago, and the oscilloscope wasn’t the only psychedelic enhancement: All over their forthcoming LP Lonerism, the band is simultaneously headier and more blistering than their debut Innerspeaker. It’s the sound of a group perfectly aware of what made them special in the first place — lysergic Lennon melodies on top, Cream-y Sabbath down low, flanger and arena choruses rippling through the rest — and coming back with a bigger, smarter, more smoked out version of it. It’s out in October on Modular; until then there’s “ Apocalypse Dreams,” and “Elephant,” and this Progress Report, and these photos from last night by wagz2it.
