Come on Like Gangbusters present crisp rock music filled with hooks and upbeat progressions, hardly a far cry from many acts in their native Sweden. One particular track, “Realization”, separates the band from hordes of similar-sounding rock groups. Focusing more on infectious power-pop than the more conventional mold of indie-rock they present on the rest of their album, “Realization” finds Come on Like Gangbusters rolling on all cylinders with a wonderfully melodic series of upbeat hooks. A galloping bass line is initially in charge, though the effervescent chorus quickly ignites excitement with chirpy rhythm guitars and soaring vocals. The final half-minute concludes with exuberant vocals and an amiable vocals that would easily compare to early Weezer, and their tendency to fill bridges or finales with slickly melodic guitar solos. The abrupt excitement in the chorus reminds favorably of Ocean Colour Scene’s “The Day We Caught the Train“, a good of model as any for quality pop songwriting.
While other album efforts are not as good as “Realization”, there are plenty of memorable moments to be had. The chorus of “Birds on the Power Line” is led by numbing guitar riffs, simplistic enough in their arrangement and approach that shades of surf-rock become apparent. The slick, Strokes-y sort of indie-rock the band produces is always fun, especially in this specific instance. Even if their style is far from groundbreaking, there’s plenty of melodic twists inherent in their songwriting to keep things additive and interesting. With ”Realization”, they look to be on the rise.
