Even though this southern rock group formed back in 2009, the four-person collective from Athens, Alabama burst into the mainstream following the release of their self-titled, four-song EP back in September 2011. Two months later, UK’s Rough Trade Records and American label ATO Records both officially signed them to formal deals. Their original name was “The Shakes,” but the band later decided to add their home state in front to differentiate themselves.
This bluesy song isn’t necessarily “new,” but the video is a recent release from the band and the track is still my favorite from their full-length debut album. Brittany Howard’s scabrous voice still comes across as sensitive, almost chilling. Drummer Steve Johnson keeps the rigid structure intact, while guitarist Heath Fogg and bassist Zac Cockrell provide the raucous roller coaster of sounds.
Their performance at this year’s Outside Lands Festival was quite the spectacle (you can check out all of our coverage here), and hopefully they get started on creating another album soon.
