Dam-Funk in a Tranquil State of Mind

Straight from the crates comes another Dam-Funk artifact — frozen in time but still fresh for 2013. Welcome to Tranquil Funk, one of the many homemade cassettes that the Pasadena potentate recorded and never officially released. It’s no surprise that he and Ariel Pink formed such a tight bond — their artistic arcs have been similarly prolific, open, and home-grown. The notion of creating art for yourself and letting the rest sort itself out. This tape was only given to two of Dam’s friends and associates, but the opalescent glow and dedication is still evident. At the time, G-Funk was ubiquitous and you can hear the influence of George Clinton, Roger Troutman, and maybe a little Snoop Dogg in the mix. You can also hear Dam’s future laid out as clear as a four lane freeway at 4 a.m.

The tracks below the jump, along with some new demo’s that Dam just recorded with Monica Mendoza. May your day be tranquil and your funk phosphorescent.
