The Stray Currents 10” is the product of a lengthy creative process that began with the capturing of live sounds at Little Gold Studios in Melbourne. With the help of Steve Fraser at Little Gold, Baptism began paring back the once-sprawling live jams releasing the inherent melody and structure of Bojan Stojanov’s pop vision. Bojan and Steve developed an intuitive partnership; Bojan was given freedom to experiment while Steve helped to draw boundaries and maintain focus in the recordings. Through this process, what began as a snapshot of a live band became the painting of a subject that wasn’t there: a space between what the band was and what the band could be.
Guest musicians added viola string arrangements, tabla rhythms and backing vocals, while existing band members tackled new instruments. Masterful keyboard and synth work, by Gerald Wells of Montero and Vishnu Keys, contribute a rich psychedelic flourish to the work.
The band then took these results for mixing with studio wizard Gareth Parton. Parton’s talent and experience as sound engineer – whose production credits include The Breeders, The Go! Team and Spiritualized – brought a new strength and clarity to the sound. The final product is the crystallisation of a vision that incorporates textures of progressive rock, Cosmiche music, pop structures and classic rock – an eclipse of the band’s acclaimed live sound and studio vision.
