I guess we knew this was coming. The AP reports that PepsiCo., the parent company of the Mountain Dew brand, has decided to end its promotional relationship with Lil Wayne due to the controversy over his Emmett Till reference on the “Karate Chop (Remix)”.

On Friday, PepsiCo said in a statement that Wayne’s “offensive reference to a revered civil rights icon does not reflect the values of our brand.” It declined to provide any further comment.

A publicist for Lil Wayne, Sarah Cunningham, said that the split was due to “creative differences” and that it was an amicable parting.

Yeah, I’m sure Wayne was real amicable about potentially losing out on millions. This does not bode well for the countless other Rappers out there with endorsement deals. I think the days of corporations signing these types of deals is about to come to an end unless the artist is super “safe”. And there aren’t too many (popular) Rappers out there these days that fall into that category. You can pick any MC at random and odds are they have at least a couple of controversial lyrics in their catalog. All it takes is that one person or group making enough of a stink and it’s an instant PR clusterfuck.
