I have a Silver Jews tee that I sport from time to time. It usually generates a few odd questions from people and the occasional harsh misguided comment. My wife hates the shirt and has threatened its demise on more than one occasion. Well I think I finally have found a band who’s tee could take the spotlight off the Joos’ shirt.
With a name that screams, “Don’t take me serious!!!,” Diarrhea Planet has managed to make a name for themselves. Their live show is by all accounts – a sight to behold with four guitarists all going full-tilt. I read one comment on a site that said, it looked like all four of them were soloing at the same time with little or no thought of what the others were doing – but somehow it sounded amazing.
I’ll be the first to admit that I passed on catching them at SXSW this past year because of the name. Further, I reluctantly downloaded this album; not really expecting much, What I got was a blast of pop-punk that grabs you by the nostrils and doesn’t let go 40 minutes. Some music makes you want to roll the windows down in your car. DP makes me want to take it a step further and scream at the cars next to me as I am pumping my fist.
In addition to all the fist-pumping, adrenaline-soaked tunes there are a couple where they hit the brakes and show another side that’s pleasing for its diversity. Not to mention, the fact that you start to miss careening off the safety rails. Kids is a pretty deep song, even for a band not named after excrement, dealing with the challenges that can sometimes be thrown your way at such a young age.
Who knows what’s in the cards for these guys? They seem like a band that shines bright but burns out quick. I just don’t know how they do it for the long haul, but hey I’m willing to go along for the ride and find out.
