Last month, we lost Karen Black, the great actress who was in half of the best movies of the ’70s, to cancer. A few years ago, Black sang on “Dreams Come True Girl,” one of the best songs that the singer-songwriter Cass McCombs has ever recorded. McCombs has a new album, the massive 22-song double CD Big Wheel And Others, coming out soon; we’ve already posted his song “There Can Be Only One.” Another of the album’s songs is “Brighter!,” which once again united McCombs with Black. Black, in fact, sings the entire song; we never hear McCombs’s voice. It’s a woozy country-folk song, and Black sounds warm, poised, and entirely present on it. McCombs has shared the song and dedicated it to Black’s memory, and you can hear it below.
