Turnpike Troubadours hail from Oklahoma and play a brand of Red Dirt American Country that isn’t too far from the Americana we discuss frequently around HearYa. What’s different is that these guys seem to run in a different music circle than we are normally exposed to. The Troubadours tour the US selling out 1000 seat venues on the coasts and do equally respectable numbers as they traverse the middle of the country. We didn’t learn about them through a publicist or recommendation from a friend. Oz caught them earlier this year in KC headlining a show that Jason Isbell opened. He couldn’t get over how packed the venue was and how everyone in the joint knew every word of the Turnpike Troubadours catalog. Their fans are absolutely nuts about them. My jaw dropped when I learned that they sold nearly 600 tickets at Joe’s Bar this past July… only their second time playing Chicago. There’s something going on here. Check out the session and then catch them on tour.
