White Women, the 4th studio album from Chromeo, is only less than a month away! The new LP out on May 12th via Big Beat, sees the self-proclaimed “Larry David of Funk” outfit writing & recording their most fully realized body of work to date, honing in on a sound that highlights their indie hero legacy while paying homage to some of their greatest artistic inspirations by way of well-crafted, modern pop songs + iconic imagery. Ranging from sultry R&B hooks to classic rock riffs with their always hilarious & charmingly vulnerable lyrics, White Women is their reinterpretation of the late great 70s & 80s disco funk era that gave way to the culture from which they were born.

Dave 1 and P-Thugg kicked off the album campaign in late 2013 with collaborations with Snarkitecture, MILK Studios, Tumblr & Surface To Air, made TV history with their live version of “Sexy Socialite” with Death From Above 1979 as their backing band on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon + sold out shows in the US & Europe within minutes of announcing them. 2014 sees the boys coming even stronger, with the just released video for “Jealous (I Ain’t With It)”, Coachella performances, a Red Rocks headling show, their current Come Alive Tour across the US, UK + Europe & today’s treat, album track “Ezra’s Interlude” featuring Vampire Weekend frontman Ezra Koenig.

Your Guide to Surviving (and Enjoying) Record Store Day in Cleveland

Although Record Store Day won’t celebrate its seventh birthday until Saturday, it’s already entering its awkward teenage phase. Some shop owners have become disillusioned with the glut of limited edition releases, especially those from major labels (I’m looking at you translucent Ghostbusters 12.”) Record store patrons complain about eBay flipping. It’s not uncommon to hear […]

Listen to this gnarly Delorean remix of “Touch”, the debut track from Shura.

Shura was born in London to a Russian actress & an English documentary filmmaker. One of her 1st memories is of walking around a snowy Red Square in a pink jumpsuit, otherwise occupied by the Soviet army. Her mother made a notable five-minute cameo in Mission Impossible but turned down a role in GoldenEye, believing James Bond to be anti-Russian.

Whilst her early demos started at University in London, Shura’s passion for songwriting in fact came via her brother, who would DJ drum&bass at the weekends, & installed an early love of electronic music in his sister. Keen to impress him, Shura began building her own songs, refining her production skills + immersing herself in the textured sounds of Massive Attack. She took the decision to make music her life, but needed the fuel to write first. And it was in South America, where Shura worked for an extended period after her studies, that her confessional songwriting found its pop filter. Alone & unable to speak Spanish, she would walk pumas previously raised in captivity around the Amazon, contemplating past relationships, & future music.

What emerged was “Touch”. An effortless mix of hip-hop beats, lush synths, + Shura’s smooth & affecting vocal, there is an emotional resonance to the lyrics (“I want to touch you, but I’m too late. I want to touch you, but there’s history”) which lends the song an immediately-recognisable quality; the sadness of not being with someone anymore, but the infinite tenderness of your time together. Written & co-produced by Shura, the single assimilates a love of Blood Orange with the atmospheric pop of Janet Jackson’s The Velvet Rope.
