In an era when many formerly blog-hyped indie rock bands with terrible names have descended into obscurity, Scottish wailers We Were Promised Jetpacks are still going strong, and their third album Unraveling is set to arrive this fall. After sharing the epic, sincere, math-rocking first single “Safety In Numbers,” they’ve hit us with “I Keep [...]
At this point, we’re used to seeing indie bands catapult from relative obscurity to national TV exposure. But if you’ve every been lucky enough to see Erika Anderson stalking the stage of a tiny club, with her old band Gowns or on her own as EMA, then you know what an unlikely triumph it is [...]
Chicago rockers Modern Vices call themselves a “dirty doo-wop” band, but that’s not a very good description of what they do on “Taller In The Sunshine.” The song is much closer to the Strokes and Franz Ferdinand — swaggering urban garage rock with discordant guitar leads and a battered, hi-hat-heavy drumbeat topped off by a [...]
Ahead of their monumental broadcast of the Dimensions Festival opening concert today at 7pm in Croatia today, Boiler Room announce that DARKSIDE have been added to the line up.
The addition makes a dazzling program even more unmissable, featuring Caribou’s only livecast summer concert, Nils Frahm & Kwabs beamed from a 2000-year-old Roman Amphitheatre on the Adriatic near Fort Punta Christo, Croatia.
The show represents a leap forward in production values for the break out website, founded in 2010 from a disused 1930s boiler room using a webcam duct taped to the wall. Now a global name set on doing things their way, Boiler Room have grown even more ambitious for how they can lovingly represent underground music.
The Dimensions event will be beautifully shot & captured by the Boiler Room team, who have partnered with video platform Dailymotion to overhaul their entire production standard.
Don’t miss it live HERE. Noon central time.
“Doubt” is the 1st single taken from Kele’s forthcoming album Trick.
Doubt ✞ buy
With his sterling solo effort, The Boxer, Kele swapped out the angular guitars + anthemic choruses of Bloc Party & headed straight to the dancefloor, producing a shimmering triumph of an album which melded influences as disparate & surprising as two-step, Italo-house & old school garage with seamless ease. Trick, his sophomore effort, sees Kele travelling further down the rabbit hole, but making something darker + more sensual in the process. This time round, proceedings take on a distinctly libidinous, downcast feel, the air thick with possibility & tension.
Honed by periods of weekly DJ sets, not to mention stints producing his own electronic music, Trick is a different, sleeker beast than The Boxer, with a new-found emphasis on Okereke’s soulful vocals, which grew & changed during the course of recording the album in London + New York. Framing Okereke’s intensely personal songwriting within the context of dance culture, Trick is a record which boldly stands at the crossroads of club history, old school soul + modern electronic R&B, with a distinctively British twist.
Trick is expected to be released this Fall.
