On the heels of 2 sold-out NYC shows, 6 performances at SXSW + a sold-out show in Los Angeles on Monday night, London collective Jungle have announced they’ll return to N. America this June. Kicking off on June 6th in LA at the El Rey Theatre the band will travel across N. America ending the tour on June 19th in Philadelphia (full list of dates below). Jungle will release a 12” EP this May on XL Recordings that includes “Busy Earnin’”, “Platoon”, & “The Heat,” which will be followed by a debut album this summer.

Based around a core musical duo known simply as ‘J’ & ‘T’ who expand to a thrilling 7-piece live band, Jungle make mesmeric, modern soul with true global appeal.

“Busy Earnin” is the groups 3rd single. It’s music video is directed by Oliver Hadlee Pearch and the band’s own ‘J’, the same team that made the videos for Jungle’s previous acclaimed singles, “Platoon” + “The Heat,” which all have now been viewed over 4.9 million times between them.

Riding high on the momentum from the dual release of their FABRICLIVE 74 compilation (out yesterday, 03/18, via fabric) + the Beatbox EP (also out yesterday, via OWSLA) UK production duo extraordinaire, Jack Beats, are gearing up for a tour across the US, Canada & Mexico this April + May. The latest EP from the pair of DJ Plus One & Beni G features two new cuts “Beat Box” + “The Ill Shit”, which both highlight an exuberant & joyous facet of today’s deeply-grooved electro house.

The tour kicks off in Austin, Texas on April 24th at Kingdom & will traverse across the continent until May 10th. Support on this tour will be coming from Brooklyn’s unrivaled king of heavy bass house AC Slater.

Track of the Day: Sharon Van Etten – "Taking Chances"

As seen here last week, Sharon Van Etten has a new album, Are We There, out this May via Jagjaguwar. “Taking Chances” is the first single and it’s a beauty. While we’ve gotten used to hearing SVE work her garage magic on Epic and Tramp, this track begins in a new way. A smooth-thumping bass line, which sounds like it was pulled from an R&B track, opens as a few keyboard blips sparkle around before the guitar line comes in. With plenty of woodblock percussion, SVE croons the lyrics. The chorus brings the fuzzy guitar, but like Jolie Holland’s latest take, it looks like some of our best singer-songwriters are beginning to mine the soul and R&B mine not unlike Cat Power’s The Greatest.  The highlight of the track is the short bridge where SVE lets her voice soar opening up the slick rhythm of the track with melodic verve. The instrumentation here is varied and wonderfully surprising and looks like even though SVE might be taking some chances, she’s also hitting it out of the park at the same time.

There are some amazing things happening in Tel Aviv these days. Followers of literature have no doubt heard, and hopefully read, the Tel Aviv-based short story writer Etgar Keret, whose surreal writing calls to mind what would happen if Kafka were a jester. Last year, Vaadat Charigim (“Exceptions Committee” in English), the Tel Aviv trio of Juval Haring, Yuval Guttman and Dan Fabian Bloch, release their first album The World is Well Lost, which has just received its vinyl treatment stateside by Warm Ratio Records (facebook). 

Lovers of shoegaze and drone will feel right at home in Vaadat Charigim’s luxuriant tunes. Opener “Odisea” begins with a buzz before opening into a melodic line surrounded by cascading feedback. There’s a lot of pulp in the record. Producer Kyle “Slick” Johnson (whose previous production credits include Modest Mouse, Wavves, and Cymbals Eat Guitars) worked with the band, recording in a Tel Aviv apartment. And the result is a magical garage sound with jutting guitar riffs jabbing out of your speakers as Juval Haring’s soothing baritone keeps melody the central focus. You can hear the great shoegaze bands of the late 80s and 90s leaving their fingerprints throughout the record. “Kezef al Hamayim” rips a page from the Cure’s playbook while muddying up the venerable British band’s instrumentation with a hyperactive guitar solo.

Indianapolis based Warm Ratio’s packaging is highlighted by the clear aqua splash wax. The packaging is a simple jacket, but not much else is needed with the fantastic covers.
Having listened to this record several times after seeing WLFY amigo Brett McGrath playing it on repeat on Spotify (always a great way to discover new artists), I immediately thought that this was going to be one of those records that sound even better on wax, and I haven’t been disappointed. The drone and buzz of The World is Well Lost is best served on your favorite turntable with those lovely hisses and pops adding even more texture to an already beautifully nuanced album. 
The group is heading to the US this spring, playing SXSW and some other dates in support of their record.

Perhaps the best part about Vaadat Charigim for American audiences is their ability to feel both familiar and different at the same time. The video for “Ein Nehama Ladoachim,” directed by David Michael Shachar, shows the band playing in Dizengoff Center in Israel. Juval’s disaffected gaze, intoning the lyrics in front of a Hello Kitty facade could have been ripped from the Golden Age of 1990s Slackers. The ambivalent and alienated track is dreamlike and distant.
The traces of the influence are there, but the language barrier (for anyone who doesn’t speak Hebrew) gives the listener more time to focus on the music as an entire organism rather than something that’s somehow divided by different intentions. In fact, it’s the beautiful solidarity of The World is Well Lost that makes it such a fantastic album and one that you should own.
